Novato
The City of Novato, one of the Bay Area's premier communities, is located in Marin County 29 miles north of San Francisco. Novato is the second largest city in the county, with a population of about 47,000. Novato's sphere of influence includes nearby unincorporated areas. With this additional area, Novato totals 43 square miles and a population of 53,000.
According to WikiPedia, Novato was originally the site of several Coast Miwok villages: Chokeche, near downtown Novato, Puyuku, near Ignacio, and Olompali, at the present Olompali State Historic Park.
First established in 1839 through a grant of almost 9,000 acres to Fernando Feliz from the Mexican government. This was followed by land grants form 1840 through 1844. Just four years later, Novato became part of the United States along with the surrounding territory which became California in 1848.
