Real-life, real-time learning
Leadership Novato offers real-life, real-time learning. Guest lecturers examine structure, operation and financing of government, current issues and alternative solutions facing the economy, the environment, government, transportation, culture, health, recreation, human services and education.
Who Should Attend & Why
Leadership Novato is well-suited to leaders in business, career professionals and independent business owners and members of public, private and non-profit organizations and service clubs and citizens who volunteer or are retired.
Candidates and graduates enjoy:
- the pursuit of life-long learning
- knowledge of issues firsthand, thereby becoming effective in influencing policy change on a community level
- a greater pool of business/professional contacts throughout the Bay Area
- effective interaction with local government and community agencies, special-interest groups
- satisfying personal contacts in civic, business and professional life
- Team Project community service
Leadership Community Projects
Key to Leadership Novato are team projects. The class (averaging 24 students) divides into four-member break-out teams. Teams select or create a project to benefit others. In that process, candidates grapple with the challenges of the team process and the finer points of leadership.
The Program
Leadership Novato candidates are brought together for a retreat/first class in September and continue to meet one full day a month for eight months, celebrating graduation in May.
Leadership Novato encourages new and future community leaders to take active roles in civic organizations and causes.
Leadership Novato has graduated nearly 400 students since 1991. Many graduates are generously sponsored by their employees, leading businesses and public agencies. Together, students and their sponsors fulfill the LN vision of nurturing community leaders throughout Novato and Marin.
Tuition
Tuition is reduced $100 for candidates who pay before the June 3, 2011 deadline. Otherwise, tuition is $895 for Chamber members, $995 for non-Chamber individuals. Payments are available, however; full payment is required before Leadership Novato Retreat, September 13th. This investment covers a day-long retreat and nine intensive 8-hour sessions monthly, September to May. Continental breakfast, catered lunch and transportation on tour events are included.

Testimonials
"Participating in Leadership Novato was a perfect jump start for a newcomer to the area. In a matter of months... I was introduced to the movers and shakers of Novato. Having friends in leadership roles in Novato companies has helped me build my business and my network faster than I ever could have on my own."
Candra Canning, Class of 2010
Live Bright Now
"Leadership Novato is giving me a greater understanding of the geopolitical forces as work locally to Novato and across Marin. You can't put a price on the wisdom gained from those who have come before us."
Gerald McCarthy, Candidate, Class of 2011
Battalion Chief, Novato Fire Protection District
"It has been a privilege to be a part of this class. Even outside of the sessions, I have developed some friendships. One class participant did a loan for me so I could buy my first house here; another fellow class member was my title company contact."
Eric Lucan, 2007 Ed Stark Award Recipient
New Life Christian Center
"From the first day with a tour of Novato along with a history lesson from Diet Stroeh, I realized the rich multi-cultural and ranching history of our town for the first time. In my work on diversity issues in Novato, the historical perspective has given me a deeper understanding of how past influences the present. New relationships, collaborations and connections will be great resources to you professional and personally."
Annan Paterson, Class of 2005
