Mission
The Leadership Novato mission is to identify and nurture community leaders, to increase their practical knowledge of the Novato, Marin County and North Bay region as well as encourage and enrich individual leadership skills.

"I would like to express my appreciation for the Leadership program and the outstanding
opportunity that it affords local professionals to get involved."
Cristina MacKenzie, Kaiser Permanente, Class of 2007

Purpose
Leadership Novato candidates study the community's infrastructure through interactive presentations, site visits and tours, discussions and team community service projects.

Among the class instructors are respected elected officials, district managers, civic leaders, volunteers, activists and subject-matter experts from Novato and throughout the Bay Area.

Real-life, real-time learning
Leadership Novato offers real-life, real-time learning. Guest lecturers examine structure, operation and financing of government, current issues and alternative solutions facing the economy, the environment, government, transportation, culture, health, recreation, human services and education.

"The Leadership Novato program was the most informative and insightful nine months I have ever spent.
It is well worth the time and commitment. I would highly recommend the program."
Nancy Jones, Bank of Marin, Class of 2005

Who Should Attend & Why
Leadership Novato is well-suited to leaders in business, career professionals and independent business owners and members of public, private and non-profit organizations and service clubs and citizens who volunteer or are retired.

Candidates and graduates enjoy:
  • pursuit of life-long learning
  • knowledge of issues firsthand, thereby becoming effective in influencing policy change on a community level
  • a greater pool of business/professional contacts throughout the Bay Area
  • effective interaction with local government and community agencies, special-interest groups
  • satisfying personal contacts in civic, business and professional life
  • Team Project community service

"Leadership Novato is a wonderful way to develop resources and contacts throughout the
community and beyond. As a management tool, it cannot be overstated, and it would be
a shame to pass up the opportunity to attend."
Lt. Jim Laveroni, Novato Police Department, Class of 2005 Valedictorian

The Program
Leadership Novato candidates are brought together for a retreat/first class in September and continue to meet one full day a month for eight months, celebrating graduation in May.

Leadership Novato encourages new and future community leaders to take active roles in civic organizations and causes.

Leadership Novato has graduated nearly 400 students since 1991. Many graduates are generously sponsored by their employees, leading businesses and public agencies. Together, students and their sponsors fulfill the LN vision of nurturing community leaders throughout Novato and Marin.

"I am so appreciative of the Leadership Novato program. It gave me the courage to follow my passions
and beliefs... Now, I'm surrounded by like-minded affirming visionaries and friends."
Veronica Valero, Novato Live Well Network, 2006 Ed Stark Award Recipient

Leadership Community Projects
Key to Leadership Novato is team projects. The class (averaging 24 students) divides into four-member break-out teams. Teams select or create a project to benefit others. In that process, candidates grapple with the challenges of the team process and the finer points of leadership.

Tuition
Tuition is $895 for Chamber members, $995 for non-Chamber individuals. Payments are available, however, full payment is required before Leadership Novato Retreat, September 8th. This investment covers a day-long retreat and nine intensive 8-hour sessions monthly, September to May. Continental breakfast, catered lunch and transportation on tour events are included.

Participant Selection
Applicants selected to participate in the program represent Novato and Marin's cultural diversity of economic, occupational and activitist residents. The Leadership Advisory Committee, all LN graduates, reviews applications to ensure qualified individuals are accommodated.

Scholarships
Every year one full- and several half-scholarships are given to candidates. The generous donations by Leadership Novato's supportive alliance of business leaders and employers make these student scholarships possible.

Session Sponsorship
Leadership Novato relies on member contributions to sustain its level of excellence. Sponsorship of a class session promotes your business and your commitment to developing future community leaders.

"It has been a privilege to be a part of this class…One class participant did a loan for me so I could
buy my first house here; another fellow class member was my title company contact."
Eric Lucan, New Life Christian Center, 2007 Ed Stark Award Recipient 2009
Candidate for Novato City Council

Ed Stark Achievement Award
Named after the program founder, this honor is awarded to the class participant who demonstrates exceptional leadership skills throughout the nine-month leadership program and who strives to be an active leader in Novato's future.

Class Valedictorian
Each graduating class elects from within its ranks their Leadership Valedictorian. Selection is based on commitment to the year's curriculum and demonstration of recognized leadership traits, including resourcefulness, team play, follow-through, adaptability, listening and praising others, optimism, and willingness to take risks. Valedictorians are called upon to promote the ongoing mission of Leadership Novato and represent their class following graduation.
