Leadership Novato 2020 Service Projects

The legacy of Leadership Novato comes to fruition in the form of Team Service Projects. Submitted by the public, each LN team chooses a project to work on throughout the year. Projects go on to benefit a local need or charity. The project, not only benefits the community but allows the LN students to exercise their new leadership skills and utilize their local contacts.
Each team works on their projects independently and on their own time. Projects are sometimes immense and complex, with many moving parts and stakeholders. Teams are assigned a mentor from the extensive LN alumni database; these mentors serve as a guide and resource to the teams during their process. The aim of this portion the Novato Chamber's Leadership Novato Program, it to help Teams really practice the leadership skills they are learning; while learning to work within the structure of a thriving community.

Marketing & Outreach

NovatoSpirit

The goal of this project is to assist NovatoSpirit with a plan to increase their visibility and community support for their athletic scholarship fund.  Earlier this year, the team hosted a retreat at the Novato Oaks Inn with a small group of Board members to help the organization explore its specific positioning within the community.  As a result, the team put together a 12-month marketing plan with creative ideas to help with the promotion of NovatoSpirit throughout the year with ideas for a specific annual campaign.  In addition, they worked with a local graphic designer who helped create an optional new logo for the organization to consider for this campaign.  They also worked with NCTV to create a short promotional video utilizing interviews with mentors from the organization as well as family members who have benefited from NovatoSpirit. Due to the recent coronavirus crisis, this aspect of the project will be delivered later in the year.  Lastly, the group secured a small grant from the Rossi Family Foundation to go towards the sponsorship fund.  This project ultimately seeks to increase and sustain prior donor involvement and to build interest and engagement in hopes that more people can learn about the good work NovatoSpirit has been doing for the past 15 years.

Library Love

Lynwood Elementary School

The goal of the project is to create a library at Lynwood that encourages students and families to read, explore and learn.  To reach that goal we need to make our space student friendly, functional, updated and bilingual.  Our library is out dated and does not have the necessary furniture and supplies for our librarian to support the students in the best way possible.  We would like to update our space to create a student friendly environment as well as continue to develop our library into one that is bilingual from TK - 5th grade.  The ideas below are some of the specific ideas we have to make our library the amazing place we know it can be.  If completing all of the ideas below is not possible we can prioritize our specific plans to be sure the most important aspects of the change get completed.

ART WITH A PURPOSE

School Fuel

The Leadership Novato Team would recruit artists in our community to partner with the students in our schools to work collaboratively on a Re-purposed Art project. The goal will be to engage 20-30 students as a pilot the first year. Each collaborative team will be given a stipend to purchase the items to be re-purposed. At the end of the project the re-purposed items will be displayed for the public at the School Fuel Art Smart Showcase, the Tour of Novato, and finally sold at the Novato Art and Wine Festival with proceeds going to School Fuel for the purpose of continuing the program in future years. The Leadership Novato team will also work with the artists and NUSD to make sure that necessary screening checks take place.

Bahia Fire Fuel Reduction

Bahia Firewise Committee / Novato Fire Protection

Bahia is one of seven (7) Novato neighborhoods that is a recognized Firewise Site. We are committed to reducing our potential for wildfire and YTD have invested $66,150.52 (expense $50,025.00 and time $16,125.52) in fuel reduction efforts. In May of this year we partnered with 2 (two) other Novato Firewise sites, Pacheco Valle and Black Point/Green Point for the 'Tour of Novato' event. Our goal was to raise awareness of Novato residents on the topic of wildfire preparedness. Despite these efforts we are still at high risk due to the large amount of county and city open space that surrounds our neighborhood. We believe it will take many organizations and leaders from within our city coming together to solve this problem. Additionally, once addressed we believe the blueprint that is established from our project can be used across the neighborhoods in Novato that are bordered by the WUI.
